A great resource for the effective use of rebuttal in Outcome 3 and a heavy issue when it comes to Identity & Belonging and Encountering Conflict. I cannot encourage you enough to use these media issues for your writing...What would you do?

I was teaching late Wednesday and did not get a chance to see Veteran journalist Kerry O'Brien on Julia Zemiro's Home Delivery on ABC TV at 8pm. However, part of the ABC NewMail brief attracted me; "Kerry O'Brien laments state of Australian politics and rise of 'gladiatorial' interviewing" and I read on...then, as often happens within the media, there was an excellent counter article written that also has a wealth of resources for the VCE student grappling with Outcome 3 - please see this article herein
Matt Chun, a cafe owner in Bermagui, has made two very interesting statements over the past week. One was his self-proclaimed "simple chalked jibe", the next was his reference to a country that "claims to be proud of its 'larrikin' irreverence and self-effacing humour." It does provide food for thought in this way. People have responded with hatred and violence and condemnation as his opinions make then question their identity as they question his....Who are you calling a ...?

So how can it be fair or equal that David died labelled as something he was not? How was his identity protected? How was Marco’s dignity recognised and respected?
Some issues are not black and white; there is no yes or no option, no good or bad version. Some issues are touchy; one will be labelled merely by commenting, even when avoiding labels themselves. VCE English is, at it's very foundations, concerned with opening our eyes to persuasion and manipulation. How words and connotations, and sometimes what is not said, has the most impact on one's opinion or perspective. This article by Michael Bradley is excellent food for thought for both Outcome 2 and Outcome 3.
As with so many media articles we have another here that is just as useful to Outcome 2 as Outcome 3. Through the marketing and promotion of the "Aussie" stereotype we see "Identity & Belonging" and the "Us vs. Them" mentality; as well as the brilliance of $1.2 million dollars worth of persuasive humour. So why are so many people upset?LAMB-BASTE-D!
The Drum is an excellent resource for VCE students and there are selected current articles at the bottom of each ABC Newsmail delivery. One caught my eye last night; written by Ruby Hamad, the opinion piece focused on the very subjective topic of religion, which for so many is the core of their identity & belonging and in so many cases is the basis for encountering conflict.Why do they fight?
A black and white answer is straight forward and logical; it is objective and focuses on facts...racism is anything BUT a black and white answer. It is discrimination and 'Nativism' and 'Us versus Them' and 'Identity and Belonging' and fear and mistrust and misunderstanding and prejudice and bigotry and a multitude of opinions and positions and knowledges and justifications...and so very relevant to VCE English...A RAINBOW NATION...
VCE English Outcome 3 is designed to help young people understand using language to persuade; as we are persuaded by our community and environment, as we are persuaded by words and images and how we can then understand how to persuade others. To be persuasive you must be objective, and to be objective you must be able to consider both sides of an issue equally; a difficult concept when the issue is emotive.MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD...
